Did you know we have 7 senses?

The five main senses are the following:

  • Touch — tactile
  • Sound — auditory
  • Sight — visual
  • Taste — gustatory
  • Smell — olfactory

Aside from these, we have two other powerful senses:

  • Vestibular: the sense of balance and movement
  • Gives us information about where our body and head are in space
  • Affects our sense of balance and coordination of movement
  • Proprioception: the sense of body awareness, position and posture
  • Gives us information about where our body parts are and what they are doing
  • Affects reflexes and coordination of movement

So, what is Sensory Integration?

P1430798 (3)

Sensory integration is the ability:

  • to take in information through senses (touch, movement, smell, taste, vision, and hearing),
  • to put it together with prior information (memories, and knowledge stored in the brain),
  • and to make a meaningful response.

In simpler terms, Sensory Integration is the process by which our senses work together to make sense of the world, and how we should behave in it.

Why is Sensory Integration So Important?

As children grow, they learn to take in and process information from their sensory experiences with their environment. How efficiently they process this information affects their ability to perform everyday tasks. Sensory Integration sets a crucial foundation for later, more complex learning and development.

Children with Sensory Integration Difficulties have trouble coordinating and organising their senses. They may face difficulties with everyday tasks, affecting their attention, learning and behaviour. If your child develops consistent signs of the following, we can help!

  • Overly sensitive to touch, movement, sights, smells, tastes and sounds
  • Under-reactive to sensory stimulation (e.g. oblivious to pain, crashes into objects)
  • Activity level that is unusually high or low (e.g. easily fatigue)
  • Delays in speech, language, motor skills or academic achievement
  • Coordination problems (e.g poor motor skills)
  • Poor organisation of behaviour (e.g. aggressive, impulsive, easily distracted)
  • Poor self-esteem or self-confidence
